Every year on the third Thursday of May, Ukrainians wear vyshyvankas to celebrate World Vyshyvanka Day — an event that began as a simple student initiative and has grown into an international celebration of unity, culture, and identity.
In 2026, Vyshyvanka Day falls on May 21.
The idea of creating this holiday originated in 2006 in Chernivtsi. At that time, students suggested that everyone who wished to take part should wear a vyshyvanka on one day of the year to support Ukrainian national traditions and show respect for their culture.
Since then, Vyshyvanka Day has gained great popularity. Today, it is celebrated by Ukrainians around the world — in Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, and even Africa.
A vyshyvanka is not just an item of clothing. It is a symbol of our history, strength, connection between generations, and love for Ukraine. Every ornament carries a part of our culture, memory, and resilience.
On this day, we wear vyshyvankas with special pride — as a sign of unity, respect for Ukrainian traditions, and gratitude to those who are defending our right to be Ukrainian today.
Happy Vyshyvanka Day!
Respectfully,
